Hooking Up a Cable-Ready Television
There are several ways to connect a TV to our cable system. The type of equipment you have will determine your setup.
Things you need:
- Cable-ready TV and owner's manual
- Original remote control unit
- Coaxial cable with "F" connectors at each end (This is a common type of cable you may already have; if you do not have one, you can find a cable hookup kit at the Computer Store in Records Hall, or a university bookstore.)
What to do:
- Plug your TV into an electrical outlet.
- Connect one end of the coaxial cable to the cable outlet on the wall plate.
- Connect the other end of the cable to the jack on the back of your TV.
- Turn on your TV and set it to CATV mode. Some televisions do this automatically through an onscreen programming menu. Consult your television owner's manual.
- You should see a clear picture. If not check our troubleshooting guide for helpful tips.
- Consult the channel lineup for specific channel listings.
Hooking Up a VCR
Things you need:
- Second coaxial cable
- VCR manual
What to do:
- Plug the VCR into an electrical outlet.
- Connect a coaxial cable from the wall plate to the tuner input on the back of the VCR.
- Connect a second coaxial cable from the tuner output on the back of the VCR to the TV.
Hooking Up a Noncable-Ready Television
Things you need:
- A balun, if your TV is noncable-ready (The VHF input is two screws)
- Coaxial cable with "F" connectors at each end (This is a common type of cable you may already have; if you do not have one, you can find a cable hookup kit at the Computer Store, Records Hall, or the university bookstore.)
What to do:
- Plug your TV into an electrical outlet.
- Screw the prongs of the Balun to the VHF input on the back of your TV.
- Connect one end of the coaxial cable to the cable outlet on the wall plate.
- Connect the other end of the cable to the Balun.
- Consult the channel lineup for specific channel listings.
NOTE: Noncable-ready TVs will receive only channels 2 through 13. If you want to receive the rest of the network channels, you will need a cable-ready VCR. To connect, follow the instructions for Hooking up a VCR using the Balun to connect the “RF Out” line from the VCR to the television.
You will need a splitter if you want to watch one station and record programs on another station at the same time. The setup varies with the model of VCR. Consult your owner's manual.
